My Whole-House Chore List

I KNOW I’m not the only mom who’s been in this position…

You’re getting ready for a party, family get-together, having some friends over for dinner, etc., and trying to get the house in tip-top shape. The kids (and husband LOL) are purposely trying to avoid you because they know you’ll ask for help.

OR on the very rare occasion that they ask what they can do to help, you respond with some version of the following:

“Clean your room!”

“You’re in charge of cleaning the bathroom.”

“It would be really helpful if you cleaned up the family room for me.”

And then they come to you saying they’re finished. You believe them! You make a mental note to double check that they did it right, but you’re thankful that they took that one task off your hands.

…or did they?

You finish what you were doing, forgetting to check behind them, and guests start to show up. You’re then hustling around, being the happy little hostess, when someone asks where the bathroom is.

OH NO! YOU DIDN’T CHECK!!

You hold your breath, tell them where it is, and you may even throw in a bit of an, “Excuse the mess – I didn’t check the bathroom after my child cleaned it.” (Am I the only one who does this?) And you wait, cringing the entire time, for them to come back out.

To not make it entirely obvious, you give it a few minutes and go check the bathroom. There’s dirty clothes all over the floor, ripped up toilet paper that the dog got into, and blue liquid dripping from the side of the toilet.

You call your child into the bathroom and mutter through clenched teeth, “I thought I asked you to clean the bathroom for me!”

“Oh I did mommy! I used the little toilet scrubber like you do and I used toilet paper to wipe off the counter! Didn’t I do a good job?”

I don’t know how many times something like this has happened in my house, so like I said, I KNOW I can’t be the only one. At least I hope I’m not!

So one day I created this whole-house cleaning list. Do I still have to check behind them? Sure! I mean they’re still children so I don’t expect perfection, but the resulting image is so much less daunting than before. They know what they need to do, and they get it done.

Here is the list I use. You can download and edit my list to fit your needs as well!
